One of the best things, in my opinion, about yard sales and thrift stores are the books. We love books at our house and we buy a LOT of them throughout the year. But, I don’t want to go broke; ergo, yard sales and thrift stores.
If you are worried that the authors are getting the shaft when you buy a used book, here is an excellent article about buying used versus new. And yes, we still buy new books too. Who doesn’t love stepping into a Barnes and Noble? The smell alone draws me in, just like a library.
Here’s what we picked up during the month of September!
California by Edan Lepucki. This looked very interesting to me.The Onion Field by Joseph Wambaugh. I’ve never read this one, have you? Joseph Wambaugh is a former LAPD detective sergeant and this is actually based on a true story.
Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi. I am a sucker for Young Adult books. This one isn’t the first in the series, though. It’s actually the third, sigh.
Ape House by Sara Gruen. Did you read Water for Elephants? I thought it was excellent. I expect no less from this one.
The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. This is another pick by Hayden. I’ll let you know what he thinks.
500 Cocktails by Wendy Sweetser. I love the internet, but even something as simple as looking up a recipe for a Cosmo is better with a book in my opinion.
Innocent As Sin by Elizabeth Lowell. I really like Elizabeth Lowell’s books and by some bizarre quirk, I don’t believe that I read this one.
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. I know that I’ve bought this book at least once before and then never picked it up to read it. I have no idea where my other copy went to, but I am determined to read this one. Have you read it?
Unlimited by Jillian Michaels. I know absolutely nothing about Jillian Michaels except for what I saw on The Biggest Loser. This looks interesting though….
Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. I found this trade paper back copy of this book to add to our shelves. Do you prefer one type of print book over another? We love trade paper backs at our house. They fit in my purse better and don’t have the heft of a hardback, but are easier to hold and are just better overall than a paperback.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. This was another addition by Hayden. Some things we just need to have, apparently!
Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child by Bob Spitz. I have always had an interest in Julia Child and now I can indulge it. I love biographies!
Wicked Business by Janet Evanovich. I have a great love of Janet Evanovich books. This isn’t Stephanie Plum, but they are still entertaining.
And now onto the cookbooks. Yes, yes, I know what you are thinking. She does NOT need any more cookbooks. I have even uttered those words myself. But, when you find them for 10 CENTS each, you have to give them a home. Right? Right?!?
Taste of Home Backyard Grilling
Vegetarian and Vegetable Cooking by Christine Ingram
Amazing Appetizers by Tupperware
George Stella’s Good Carb Family Cookbook
Chocolate Lover’s Cookies by Tupperware
Food and Wine Magazine’s Quick From Scratch Soup and Salads Cookbook
That’s most of what we picked up in the month of September. I know there are a few here and there that I’ve forgotten to include, but you get the idea.
What books did you pick up in September?

I totally agree with you about thrift stores and yard sales. I ALWAYS look for books first. That Jillian Michaels book looks interesting to me. And speaking of cookbooks, October is National Cookbook Month and I have a post on my blog (smsnonfictionbookreviews DOT com) where you can linkup any cookbook reviews you might do on your blog this month for more views. So if you end up reviewing one….
Thanks!
Wow! You made out like a bandit! 🙂 Thanks for sharing this at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com!
